Williams gets extension after 6-5 season

Associated Press

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State football coach Bobby Williams has been given a $50,000 raise and a two-year contract extension.

Williams, 43, will see his annual base salary raised to $214,800 in 2002. His total compensation package will exceed $500,000.

The pay package was confirmed Wednesday by university spokesman Terry Denbow.

The move comes as Williams and his team, 6-5 this season, prepare for the Silicon Valley Classic bowl game against Fresno State on Dec. 31.

The two-year extension, through the 2006 season, contains a rollover provision so the contract always has five years remaining. The original five-year contract was set to expire after three more seasons.

Williams has a 12-11 record in his first two years as coach.

Williams' compensation package, which includes $250,000 from television and radio shows plus income from shoes and apparel and summer camp contracts, ranks near the bottom of the list for Big Ten coaches, the Lansing State Journal reported.
