TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ The performance on the field may have been poor, but the mental attitude of Tulsa made it a winning season, Golden Hurricane interim coach Pat Henderson figures.

"You've got to be proud of the way the players kept fighting," Henderson said after Southern Methodist beat Tulsa 28-14 Saturday.

"The effort and the commitment of this team is what we've been playing with," Henderson said.

SMU sophomore Josh McCown set a school record by completing 19 consecutive passes, going 24-of-29 for 300 yards and three touchdowns.

He began his streak with 11:00 remaining in the first quarter with a 9-yard pass to Chris Cunningham. He passed for 253 yards during the streak, which ended when he overthrew his pass to Bryan McDearman on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The streak broke the previous school record of 13, set by Bobby Watters in 1986.

McCown, who has thrown for 11 touchdowns and 1,384 yards this season, was intercepted on the next play by Taquan Gullet, giving Tulsa the ball at the SMU 46.

Tulsa (2-9, 1-6 Western Athletic Conference), which trailed 28-0 at that point, scored on Ken Bohanon's 1-yard run with 11:56 remaining.

Southern Methodist (4-5, 3-2), which held Tulsa to one first down in the first half, has won four straight, the longest current winning streak in the WAC.

Cody Cardwell caught 10 passes for 146 yards and one touchdown, while fellow freshman Chris Cunningham caught eight passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

SMU had 354 yards of total offense to Tulsa's 204.

The Golden Hurricane are 1-3 since Henderson took over after Dave Rader was fired Oct. 25. Tulsa freshman quarterback Josh Blankenship completed 20 of 34 passes for 167 yards, one interception and one touchdown, and its leading rusher was Bohanon, who gained just 27 yards.

John Mosley, who needed 144 yards on the ground for 1,000 this season, carried the ball eight times for only 17 yards.

Tulsa only had 39 yards of total offense in the first half to the Mustang's 223.

SMU scored on its first possession, driving 69 yards and scoring on a 25-yard pass to Cunningham. Rodnick Phillips scored on a 3-yard run to make it 14-0 just 11:44 in.

In the second quarter, the Mustangs drove 80 yards to score on a 3-yard run by Cardwell for a 21-0 lead.
