Grambling 25, Winston Salem 23

SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Lionel Hayes threw for 372 yards, including a 41-yard TD pass to Walter Williams in the fourth quarter, as Grambling State held on to beat Winston-Salem State 25-23 Saturday.

Hayes completed 22 of 44 passes and Williams caught five for 138 yards for Grambling State (7-3).

Winston-Salem (7-3), which had won seven straight games, trailed 18-3 after three quarters but closed within two points early in the fourth.

Tory Woodbury's 38-yard pass to Chris McGowens set up an 8-yard touchdown run by Terrie Newkirk to make it 18-10. Woodbury then hooked up with Dontrieze Chapman on a 33-yard TD.

Woodbury's pass for a two-point conversion failed, keeping Grambling up by two points.

Grambling responded with Hayes' TD pass to Williams to make it 25-16.

Woodbury scored on a 1-yard run with 43 seconds left to complete the scoring.

Winston-Salem's onside kick was recovered by Grambling's Chris Cottonham and the Tigers ran out the clock.

Grambling's Trey White ran for 59 yards and two touchdowns.

Woodbury completed 20 of 37 passes for 198 yards and also rushed for 66 yards on 19 carries for Winston-Salem.
