PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Devin Scott broke two Temple passing records, throwing for six touchdowns as the Owls rolled over Rutgers 56-28 on Saturday.

Using mostly screens and slants, Scott connected on his first 13 passes and 28 of his first 31. Overall, he was 36-of-45 for 311 yards and sat out most of the fourth quarter as Temple (2-6 overall, 2-2 Big East) held a rare big lead.

Scott broke the school record of five TD passes set by Steve Joachim in 1974 against Holy Cross and tied by Brian Broomell in 1979 against Cincinnati.

He also broke the record of 32 completions set by Henry Burris against Syracuse in 1994.

Scott threw three touchdown passes in the first half and did not throw an incompletion until late in the second quarter as Temple went up 28-7 at halftime.

The Owls scored on their first possession on a 15-yard pass from Scott to Greg Muckerson. After Rutgers (0-8, 0-4) scored on a 3-yard run by Jacki Crooks, Temple scored three second-quarter touchdowns, including two scoring passes to Carlos Johnson, who finished with 10 catches for 133 yards and three TDs.

The Owns completed their second-quarter scoring when Sean Martin picked off Michael Jones' pass and returned it five yards before lateralling to Kevin Harvey, who reversed field and went the final 36 yards for the score.

Scott completed his first three passes of the second half, including a third TD pass to Johnson for 26 yards.

Tanardo Sharps capped the Temple scoring with a 5-yard run with 1:17 left in the fourth quarter.

Crooks, who had 88 yards on 21 carries, added a 3-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter. The Scarlet Knights also got a fourth-quarter touchdown on Chad Schwenk's 28-yard pass to Errol Johnson. Jason Ohene had a 15-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
