BOSTON (AP) -- Tim Hasselbeck, inserted after starter Brian St. Pierre was injured early in the second half, threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Dedrick Dewalt with 1:48 to play to lift Boston College over Pittsburgh 20-16 Saturday. The Eagles (5-1, 2-1 Big East) have their best record since 1992, when they won their first seven games and finished 8-3-1. Pittsburgh (3-3, 1-2) dropped its second straight. Hasselbeck, sidelined with a separated shoulder suffered in last week's 24-14 loss at Temple, completed 13-of-24 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns. Pittsburgh broke a 13-13 tie on Nick Lotz's third field goal of the game, a 25-yarder with 13:17 to play. Boston College's John Matich was wide left on a potential game-tying 50-yarder with just over four minutes left. But the Eagles held Pittsburgh and took over on their 34 with 3:03 left and went seven plays for the game-winner. The Panthers, who led 10-7 at the half, increased the lead to 13-7 on Lotz's 29-yard field goal with 4:08 left in the third quarter before Hasselbeck connected on a 35-yard scoring toss to Dewalt to tie the game. The point after attempt by Matich was blocked by Demond Gibson. Trailing 7-0 midway into the second quarter, Pittsburgh inserted backup quarterback David Priestley and rallied for scores on consecutive possessions to move ahead 10-7. The Eagles had jumped ahead 7-0 when St. Pierre, a redshirt freshman making his first college start, threw his first career TD pass, a 4-yarder to Brian Arndt late in the opening quarter. The teams had field goal attempts blocked on successive possessions early in the second quarter, BC's a 37-yarder and Pittsburgh's a 36-yarder. St. Pierre was lost with a concussion during Boston College's first possession of the second half. The Eagles' leading rusher, Cedric Washington, was hobbled by an ankle injury in the second quarter and was held under 100 yards for the third time in six games.
