CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Willie Hurst rushed for 108 yards and two
touchdowns, and Washington returned two interceptions for scores as
the Huskies beat Oregon State 47-21 Saturday.
The Beavers had a 434-347 advantage in total yards but committed
seven turnovers against Washington (3-2, 2-0 Pac-10), which led
45-0 at halftime.
The low point for the Beavers (3-2, 0-2) came when tailback Ken
Simonton, the nation's second-leading rusher, tripped over his feet
in the Oregon State end zone for a safety that made the score 47-0
with 10:47 left in the third.
Marques Tuiasosopo completed 11 of 16 passes for 93 yards and a
touchdown for the Huskies, who won their third straight after
starting 0-2. Washington also has won 12 straight over the Beavers
dating to 1985.
Washington cornerback Anthony Vontoure, suspended for last
week's game against Oregon for violating team rules, returned an
interception 44 yards for a touchdown that gave the Huskies a 14-0
lead just 2:19 into the game. Vontoure also recovered one of Oregon
State's five fumbles.
Just 12 seconds after Hurst scored his second touchdown, a
2-yarder midway through the second quarter, Jamaun Willis picked
off Terrance Bryant's pass and returned it 24 yards for a score to
make it 35-0.
It took the Huskies just 1:14 to go 81 yards for their first
score.
After gaining 45 yards on their first three plays, Tuiasosopo
got stuffed on a keeper but managed to flip the ball toward Hurst.
Hurst reached back, grabbed the ball with his left hand and ran 41
yards for the touchdown.
Oregon State scored 21 straight points against mostly reserves
during a six-minute span in the second half, but it wasn't enough
to overcome an inept first half, in which the Beavers had six
turnovers and 10 penalties for 107 yards.
Simonton, averaging 171 yards a game, rushed for 106 yards and
two short TDs. He has six straight 100-yard games going back to
last season, extending his school record.
