INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Southern's defense scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery and held eighth-ranked Hampton to two field goals to propel the No. 9 Jaguars to a 21-6 victory in Saturday's annual Circle Classic battle of Division I-AA teams. Southern limited Hampton's rushing game to 85 yards, well shy of its 233-yard average. Outside linebacker Robert Chapman returned a fumble 35 yards for Southern's second score. Fullback Lee Smith scored Southern's first touchdown on a two-yard run early in the second quarter. Chapman scored 1:50 before intermission. Flanker Haywood Gallien caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Troy Williams with 8:12 remaining in the third quarter. Acie Wyatt kicked field goals of 18 yards in the first quarter and 36 yards in the third quarter for Southern. Southern's defenders sacked quarterback Roy Johnson seven times, intercepted two passes, broke up seven other passes, and stopped Hampton with an impressive goal-line stand to start the fourth quarter. Two-time Southwest Athletic Conference champion Southern improved to 5-0 with the nonconference victory. Defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Hampton is 4-1.
