CHENEY, Wash. (AP) _ Sophomores Jovan Griffith and Jesse Chatman both rushed for more than 200 yards as Eastern Washington beat Cal-State Northridge 48-41 in a Big Sky Conference game Saturday night.

The teams combined for 1,145 yards of total offense.

Eastern Washington (2-2, 1-1 in Big Sky), which had 588 total yards, rushed for 456 of them and broke the old team mark of 438 set in 1981 vs. Carroll College.

Griffith rushed for 262 yards for the third-best mark in Eagles history, and Chatman rushed for 211, which was 12th best. Griffith's six touchdowns, including five in the first half, and 42 carries were both school records.

Eagles quarterback Chris Samms has -17 yards rushing, with two sacks, to give the Eagles 456 yards on the ground.

Cal-State Northridge (1-2, 0-1 in Big Sky) racked up 557 total yards. The Matadors led 7-0 on an 86-yard kickoff return by Terrence Jones to start the game, but Griffith scored once in the first quarter and four times in the second period as the Eagles took a 35-21 lead at halftime.

Griffith scored on runs of 4, 1, 44, 36 and 1 in the first half, when he had 179 yards.

Cal-State Northridge pulled to within 41-34 in the fourth quarter on Marcus Brady's 4th touchdown pass, with 11:35 left in the game.

But Griffith capped a 15-play, 74-yard drive with an 8-yard run that gave Eastern Washington a 48-34 led with 2:23 left.

Cal-State Northridge scored with 54 seconds left on Brady's 26-yard pass to Ryan Beckwith.

Brady finished the game 36-49 for 484 yards and five touchdowns. Aaron Arnold caught 10 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown, and Jones had 6 catches for 138 yards and two scores.

Samms, making his first career start in place of injured starter Fred Salanoa, completed 9-18 for 132 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.
