BOX SCORE
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ Mark Washington passed for 274 yards and three touchdowns and Destry Wright rushed for 163 yards as Jackson State beat Grambling State 31-6 Saturday night. Jackson State (2-1) has won five straight games over Grambling State (2-1), but the game no longer counts in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings because of the league's new divisional format. Wright took a screen pass from Washington and turned it into a 16-yard TD to give Jackson State a 10-0 halftime lead. The Tigers first score came on Brian Reynolds' 25-yard field goal late in the first quarter. The homestanding Tigers increased their lead to 17-0 when Washington, who hit 17-of-27 passes, threw a 12-yard TD pass to Sylvester Morris to end the opening possession of the second half. Grambling, forced to punt on their first seven possessions, finally got on the scoreboard when Lionel Hayes threw a 6-yard TD pass to Ellis Spears. Jackson State, which outgained Grambling 473 yards to 179, put the game out of reach with two fourth-quarter touchdowns, Washington's 21-yard TD pass to Torrey Thigpen and Wright's TD run.
