STORRS, Conn. (AP) _ Sophomore tailback Taber Small scored two touchdowns as Connecticut recorded its first-ever victory over a Division 1-A opponent, shutting out the University of Buffalo, 23-0, Saturday.

The Huskies (1-2), who will move from I-AA to I-A next season, held Buffalo to just six rushing yards on 19 carries.

UConn had lost all nine games against I-A opponents going back to 1978, including a 45-14 loss last Saturday to Kentucky. Buffalo (0-2) is in its first season as a Division I-A program.

Both of Small's touchdowns came in the second half. The first, with 3:23 remaining in the third quarter, came on a two-yard run and the second came on a 15-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Connecticut led 7-0 at intermission. The Huskies scored on their first possession when tailback Gary Chandler finished an 80-yard drive with a one-yard sweep with 3:32 left in ther quarter. UConn's drive started after Buffalo place kicker Scott Keller missed a 36-yard field goal attempt.

The Huskies held the Bulls to only four first downs in the first half, three of them coming on Buffalo's opening drive.
