WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) _ Georgetown quarterback J.J. Mont completed a 37-yard touchdown pass to George Sumner for the tie-breaking score as the Hoyas rallied to defeat Holy Cross 34-16 in a non-league game Saturday.

The Hoyas took advantage of six Holy Cross turnovers in winning the season-opener for both teams.

In the third quarter, Holy Cross' Ryan Collar converted a perfect wide-out screen to Kendy Hall for a 52-year pass-and-run touchdown. That tied the score 16-16.

But Mont responded on the next series connecting with Sumner on the 37-yard scoring pass, making the score 23-16.

Georgetown then stretched its lead to 27-16, again aided by Holy Cross misplays. After Sumner's score, Georgetown registered a safety when a long snap to Holy Cross punter Frank Traupman sailed into the end zone midway through the fourth quarter. Holy Cross again failed to execute the snap to Traupman for a second safety.

Mont then broke the game open with a 57-yard scoring pass to Reid Wakefield.

Although Holy Cross moved the ball, the Crusaders were unable to avoid critical turnovers.

After a Hoya punt and with Holy Cross seemingly headed for another score, Jim Gallagher of Georgetown intercepted a Collar pass and sped in for a 66-yard touchdown.

Georgetown totaled four interceptions in the opening half and took a 16-9 lead at halftime on a 37-yard field goal by Paul Wiorowski and a 4-yard touchdown run by Rob Belli.
