RECAP
ATHENS, Georgia (Ticker) -- Quincy Carter threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score as 13th-ranked Georgia opened its season with an easy 38-7 victory over Utah State. Carter, who doubles as a minor-league baseball player, hooked up with Terrence Edwards on a 47-yard score early in the first quarter and provided the Bulldogs (1-0) with a 21-7 lead by hitting Jermaine Phillips for a 15-yard TD just before halftime. "It was one of those games," Carter said. "It was our first game, and we got the jitters out. Our defense played well, but we will be fine (offensively). We can get away with that against Utah State, but as soon as we start conference play, we won't be able to." The 6-3, 223-pound Carter, who led Georgia to a 9-3 record in 1998, also scored on a six-yard run in the third quarter. He accounted for 19 touchdowns last season. Georgia, which scored at least seven points in each quarter, improved to 3-1 in season openers under Jim Donnan. "We are pleased with the win," Donnan said. "There's a lot of room for improvement, but we know what we have to do to get better and that's what we'll do." The Bulldogs picked off Jeff Crosbie three times and received a big game from Edwards, a redshirt freshman who caught 10 passes for 196 yards. Edwards is the younger brother of former Georgia and New England Patriots running back Robert Edwards. "Crosbie just made some bad throws," said cornerback Cory Robinson, who had two of Georgia's three interceptions. "We're disappointed in the way we played early," Crosbie said. "We needed to take better care of the ball and minimize our mistakes. Things sometimes don't go your way, but you still play hard." Jasper Sanks scored on a four-yard run 1:55 into the second quarter to give Georgia a 14-0 lead. The Aggies finally got on the board with 1:13 left before halftime as Crosbie found Jamaal Peterson for a 14-yard score. Crosbie was 20-of-41 for 316 yards for Utah State, while DeMario Brown totaled 101 yards on 16 carries. Georgia regained its two-touchdown advantage with three seconds to go when Carter found Phillips. "I'm happy with the way Quincy played," Donnan said. "He had close to 400 yards. Terrence Edwards was like a human highlight film, and our tight ends did a good job of catching the ball." Carter completed 24-of-35 passes for 320 yards without being intercepted and also carried five times for 58 yards. Sanks rushed 12 times for 49 yards for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs did all of the scoring in the second half. Carter scored from six yards out in the third carter and Hap Hines nailed a 42-yard field goal early in the fourth. Backup quarterback Cory Phillips connected with Edwards on a 53-yard TD 8:53 into the fourth to cap the scoring. "I thought we shot ourselves in the foot too many times tonight," Utah State coach Dave Arslanian said. "You can't turn the ball over too many times, so our turnovers were costly. Georgia had something to do with it, but you have to take care of the ball and capitalize on your chances in a game like this."
