RECAP
PULLMAN, Washington (Ticker) -- Mike Anderson rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns and Utah used its normally stingy defense to pound Washington State, 27-7. Anderson, who carried only 16 times, scored on runs of nine and 40 yards in a 3:14 span of the second half as Utah (1-0) built a 27-0 cushion. Washington State (0-1), which lost its ninth straight game, did not score until five minutes into the fourth quarter, when Deon Burnett found the end zone from one yard. Utah's defense, which ranked ninth in the nation last season in rushing yards against at 97.4 per game, surrendered just 103 yards. Utes quarterback Darnell Arceneaux completed 22-of-36 passes for 249 yards with two interceptions and a touchdown, finding Chris Christensen from 35 yards early in the third quarter. Christensen had 10 catches for 144 yards. Steve Birnbaum was 12-of-21 for 150 yards, and Jason Gesser went 10-of-18 for 75 yards for the Cougars, who are 0-9 since opening the 1998 season with three wins.
