Colorado State athletic director Tim Weiser and San Diego Chargers vice president and chief operating officer Michael McNeely are the two finalists for the Indiana athletics director's job, sources told ESPN.com Monday.

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana University has chosen a new athletic director and could make an announcement in the coming days, the president of IU's Board of Trustees said Tuesday.

President Myles Brand selected the successor to athletic director Clarence Doninger after final interviews with two candidates, trustees President John Walda said.

Walda declined to divulge who Brand chose, and said he did not know whether Brand's choice had accepted the job.

University spokeswoman Susan Dillman said an announcement would be made soon.

The two finalists are reported to be Colorado State athletic director Tim Weiser and San Diego Chargers vice president Michael McNeely.

Sources said Weiser is the top choice and Indiana president Myles Brand is expected to interview both candidates this week with a final decision as early as Friday.

McNeely was the athletic director at Pacific before joining the Chargers. McNeely was also the director of operations at the NCAA from 1990-97. He was also an assistant football coach at Colorado from 1981-85.

Louisville AD Tom Jurich withdrew his name from consideration last week. Present Indiana athletic director Clarence Doninger is being forced to retire in June.

Louisville athletics director Tom Jurich withdrew from the finalists list so he could continue his pursuit of a negotiated retirement settlement for Hall of Fame coach Denny Crum.

The Indiana board met Friday to discuss the athletics director vacancy and other matters.

Sources told ESPN.com last week that Jurich is in too deep into the Crum negotiations to leave without closure. But the sources said it might not be possible to close the deal prior to the Conference USA tournament in Louisville in two weeks. Crum is owed a $2 million buyout if the remaining contract isn't honored. He wants a four-year extension, but said last week he would settle for a buyout.
