CHICAGO -- Illinois' Cory Bradford now has the NCAA record
for consecutive 3-pointers all to himself.
Bradford made a 3-pointer with 13:44 left in the first half
Saturday, extending his streak to an NCAA-record 74 consecutive
games. That breaks the previous record of 73, set by Virginia
Tech's Wally Lancaster from 1986-89.
The junior has made a 3-pointer in every game of his collegiate
career.
The sellout crowd at the United Center cheered as Bradford took
his first 3-point attempt just 40 seconds into No. 5 Illinois' game
against No. 7 Arizona. He missed, and the crowd let out a
disappointed, "Oh!"
But Bradford didn't miss on his second attempt. Squaring up from
21 feet out, he let fly and the ball swished through the net as the
crowd roared.
Bradford didn't show any reaction but the fans gave him an
extended standing ovation, almost drowning out the announcement of
his record.
The team record for consecutive games with a 3-pointer (428) is
held by UNLV. The Runnin' Rebels have made at least one shot from
beyond the arc in every game since the start of the 1986-87 season,
when the 3-point shot was officially introduced to college
basketball.
