Akron hired former Indiana assistant Pat Knight as an assistant coach, Akron head coach Dan Hipsher said Friday.
Knight is being hired on an interim basis with the Zips, although Hipsher said it would be up to Knight whether or not he will become full-time. Knight replaces assistant Saint Crawford, who left for Wayne State.
"He's the best coach available," Hipsher said. "He knows the motion offense and he can really help us with only two weeks to go before practice."
"I'm just happy to be coaching again," Knight said. "With the timing of
when we left Indiana, I was facing a year of not coaching. So, I'm
fortunate for this opportunity. Coach Hipsher is well-respected in the
college basketball world and it will be good to learn from him."
Knight said he was fired when his father, Bob, was let go by Indiana on Sept. 10. Indiana never officially fired Pat Knight, but Indiana athletics director Clarence Doninger said he didn't expect him to stay.
Indiana retained assistants Mike Davis and John Treloar and elevated them
to interim head and interim associate head coach, respectively, on Sept. 12.
Pat Knight graduated from Indiana in 1995 and had been one of the Hoosiers' two recruiters. He will not be a recruiter for Akron in his immediate post. | |
