Wooden Award trims list to 22 nominees

  LOS ANGELES -- Mateen Cleaves of Michigan State and Chris Porter of Auburn were among 22 players Monday placed on the ballot for the John R. Wooden Award as college basketball's player of the year.

Fourteen of the players are seniors, and the Big 12 and Big Ten conferences each had four players on the ballot.

Included on the ballot are Courtney Alexander of Fresno State; Shane Battier and Chris Carrawell of Duke; Khalid El-Amin of Connecticut; Marcus Fizer of Iowa State; A.J. Guyton of Indiana; Tony Harris of Tennessee; Eddie House of Arizona State; Dan Langhi of Vanderbilt; and Mark Madsen of Stanford.

Also nominated are Kenyon Martin of Cincinnati; Desmond Mason of Oklahoma State; Chris Mihm of Texas; Troy Murphy of Notre Dame; Eduardo Najera of Oklahoma; Scoonie Penn of Ohio State; Morris Peterson of Michigan State; Quentin Richardson of DePaul; Etan Thomas of Syracuse; and Michael Wright of Arizona.

The 10 finalists will be announced March 28.

The Wooden Award and the Legends of Coaching Award, to be given to Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, will be presented April 7 at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
