Stanford Cardinal
RECORD: 27-4 COACH: Mike Montgomery | SEASON RESULTS | SEASON STATS
OUTLOOK
  • First round: Defeated South Carolina State, 84-65
  • Second round: Lost to North Carolina, 60-53

Stanford earned a No. 1 seed despite losing twice to Arizona. But then again, Stanford only lost one other game all season. The Cardinal have remarkable balance inside and outside, and have the depth to withstand any foul trouble.

    Get the Coach's Edge

Let the experts at Coach's Edge get you ready for the NCAA Tournament with an inside look at the Stanford playbook.
Mark Madsen gives the team senior leadership and a toughness few can match. He works best on the weakside of the lane, snatching offensive rebounds and scoring most of his points on putbacks. The Collins twins -- Jason and Jarron -- are great passers and accomplished low-post threats. Outside, David Moseley, Casey Jacobsen and Ryan Mendez are all great 3-point shooters, and Mike McDonald is great at getting the ball to where his scorers need it.

Defensively, no team is tougher in the halfcourt than the Cardinal. Stanford holds its opponents to 34 percent shooting and covers the glass like nobody's business. Those two traits help Stanford control a game's tempo.

Athletic teams that get out and run can hurt Stanford, but not as much as in the past. This is a more athletic Cardinal, especially up front. -- Greg Collins, ESPN.com
