Second round: Lost to Tulsa, 69-61

Cincinnati has everything a team could want -- size, quickness and experience -- but there's no more Kenyon Martin, the nation's best player.

Martin was the single most dominant player in college basketball. Already a defensive force, Martin made himself into a good offensive player in the offseason and should be the No. 1 pick in the next NBA draft. But that won't help the Bearcats in the tournament, where they have lost in the second round three straight years. Against Saint Louis, when Martin went down with a broken leg, the Bearcats lost their anchor.

Without Martin, Cincinnati still has incredible talent. Pete Mickeal may be the second-best player in Conference USA. He will need to step up in Martin's absence if the Bearcats hope to go far. The Bearcats have two of the country's best freshmen, with DerMarr Johnson and Kenny Satterfield. Steve Logan is an experienced backcourt backup who can hit the 3-point shot. Jermaine Tate and Ryan Fletcher are good role players who can score 15-20 points on a given night. They may need to in the tournament.

Cincinnati was my No. 1 pick for the national title until Martin's injury. It will be interesting to see how they respond in the tournament, especially against gritty teams. The Bearcats had a tendency during the season to jump on teams early and then slow down in the second half. That could be dangerous in the tournament. And they haven't shown yet how they may respond when faced with a big deficit. DePaul had them down 17, and they fought back behind Martin.
