UConn Focus Needs U-Turn

By Andy Katz

Ben Gordon
Ben Gordon says UConn can't just 'flip a switch' and expect to beat teams like Boston College in the Big East.
An uncharacteristic UConn performance at home means the Huskies need to turn things around on the road this week. UConn's ugly loss to BC on Saturday also opened the door for another Big East team to sneak up and take the top spot away from the Huskies the East Division. But is there a team steady enough to do it? Story

Monday
Villanova at Saint Joseph's (7 ET, ESPN2): The Hawks are the home team at the Palestra and are facing a bitter Wildcats' team after the loss to West Virginia. A win would really strengthen Saint Joseph's NCAA case.

Tuesday
Florida at Kentucky (9 ET, ESPN): This could end up being the best game of the year. At least until the two play again on to close out the SEC regular season (March 8). The winner becomes the favorite in the SEC East race. The loser gets its first SEC loss, but is still just as much of a threat to get to the Final Four as the winner.

Wednesday
North Carolina at Duke (9 ET, ESPN): The Tar Heels are wounded but so too is Duke. If this game were in Chapel Hill then the Tar Heels would be a legit pick for a possible surprise. But the game is in Cameron, so don't expect an upset.

Thursday
N.C. State at Wake Forest (7 ET, ESPN2): OK, we'll find out if the Wolfpack have really turned the corner on their season or if they're back to their inability to win a road game against an ACC contender.

Saturday
Michigan State at Indiana (7 ET, ESPN): The table are turned in Bloomington, where this becomes a must-win for the Hoosiers after the Spartans faced the same situation last week in East Lansing against IU.

Sunday
Wake Forest at Marquette (1:30 ET, ABC): This is one of the best February non-conference games. Both teams have a legit shot to get to the second weekend of the tournament.

  • More games to watch
  • Player of the Week
    Nick Collison F, Kansas
Collison's performance against Texas was one of the best single-game efforts of the season. Collison scored 24 points and grabbed 23 rebounds in the thrilling victory. He followed that up with 14 points and nine boards in the win at Nebraska. Collison re-asserted himself as the leader of the Jayhawks and made a strong case for his inclusion as one of the five player of the year candidates in April.

    Team of Week
    Stanford
There wasn't even a question on this one. The Cardinal pulled off an unbelievable sweep of the Arizona schools last week -- on the road. Stanford has won four straight and Mike Montgomery continues to make a strong case for Pac-10 coach of the year. The Cardinal has two more road games this week at the Oregon schools, but to get a sweep in the desert -- when Cal got swept -- was quite an accomplishment.

  • Supporting Cast
JOSH HOWARD, Wake Forest: Howard continued to make a strong argument for ACC player of the year after scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in a win over Clemson and then followed that up with 32 points and 10 boards in a win at North Carolina Sunday night.

MATT CARROLL, Notre Dame:Carroll has been the most consistent player in the Big East. Carroll scored 18 in a win over West Virginia, and then for an encore, put up 36 in a double-overtime win over Georgetown on Saturday. Carroll was 12 for 12 at the line in the two games and 8 of 19 on 3s.

T.J. FORD, Texas: Ford needs to get plenty of love for his week. He was sensational in a loss to Kansas, scoring 25 points and dishing out 10 assists. He was just as steady in the win over Oklahoma State with 17 points, and converting 6 of 7 free throws.

MATT FREJIE, Vanderbilt:He scored 31 points and grabbed nine boards in a win over Georgia and then followed that up with 20 points and five boards in the win over Ole Miss. Freije has been under the radar throughout the season but he's averaging a steady 17.7 points and 4.9 boards for the Commodores.

    Freshmen Watch
    CHRIS BOSH
    Georgia Tech

Bosh had a wonderful week. He scored 22 points in each of the two wins over North Carolina and Virginia. He made nine shots in each of the two games and also grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked seven shots in the two wins.
    CRAIG SMITH
    California

Smith has scored 19 or more points in 12 straight games. Smith put up 20 in the rout of Connecticut. He scored 25 in the win over Virginia Tech. Smith has been as steady as not only any freshman in the country but any player. He's averaging a solid 21.7 points and 8.3 rebounds a game.
    FRANCISCO GARCIA
    Louisville

Garcia had his breakout game against Indiana. He scored 23 points, made 8 of 13 shots and converted all five free throws. Garcia scored 10 points in 10 minutes in a win over Southern Miss earlier in the week.
    CARMELO ANTHONY
    Syracuse
Anthony did score 17 points, but was 7 of 17 in the loss at Rutgers. But Anthony responded with 14 points and 13 rebounds in the win over Pittsburgh on Saturday. Anthony struggled a bit from the field (4 of 11) but still had 10 defensive boards.

    On Our Radar
Larry House, Creighton: Enough about Kyle Korver for one week. Korver can't do everything for the Bluejays. House led them with 23 points in their win at Drake. The senior guard was 11 of 15 from the field for Creighton.

Raitis Grafs, Valparaiso: He scored 29 points in the win over Oral Roberts. Grafs also chipped in 24 in a stunning homecourt loss to UMKC. Grafs has been the most consistent scoring threat for Valparaiso this season, averaging 18 points a game.

Drew Schifino, West Virginia: We know West Virginia is in the Big East but Schifino still is a relative unknown nationally. He scored 31 points in the Mountaineers upset at Villanova last week. The sophomore guard scored 20 or more points in five straight games.

Brett Blizzard, UNC Wilmington: The sharp shooting Seahawk was at it again against Drexel. He scored 32 points in a key CAA matchup last week. Blizzard is averaging 21 points and shooting 46.5 percent on 3s.

    Good Wins
Syracuse 67, Pittsburgh 65: The Orangemen should get a lot of mileage out of this win. Syracuse has a legit shot to catch the Panthers in the Big East West Division after this outcome.
Texas 78, Oklahoma State 65: The Longhorns sent a clear message that they're not going anywhere in the Big 12 race. Texas bounced back from the loss at Kansas by handing the Cowboys their first conference loss.
West Virginia 91, Villanova 83: The Mountaineers aren't an NCAA team, but this win will do wonders for the program and this team's confidence. West Virginia's win at Villanova resonated throughout the league Saturday. It sent a message that they are a player in this league -- this season and beyond.
    Bad Loss
Tulsa 57, San Jose State 58: Tulsa can forget any kind of at-large berth after this defeat. Tulsa had already lost at Boise State. The Golden Hurricane need loads of help to get back in the good graces of the committee.
Georgetown 82, Seton Hall 93 (OT): Even though Georgetown was shorthanded going against Seton Hall's six players, the Hoyas shouldn't get any sympathy. The Hoyas continue to blow games that they need to win. Getting swept by the Pirates pushes them further away from the NCAA.
Saint Joseph's 68, George Washington 74: This isn't going to ruin the Hawks' season, but they can't afford to lose to the bottom teams in the A-10 and still feel totally secure. The Hawks are still an NCAA team, but their margin is getting thinner with losses like this.

    Caught Our Eye
Inside the Top 25: The Golden Eagles have quietly been cruising in Conference USA. They've won seven straight games, including a win at Cincinnati last week behind Robert Jackson's 21 points. That was the first time in six games that Dwyane Wade didn't lead the Eagles in scoring. And that's a good thing. Marquette needed more diversification offensively. The Eagles' defense had been in question, at least on stopping penetration during a two-game skid, but that seems to have been corrected. Marquette and Louisville are looking like the teams to beat in Conference USA in February.

Outside the Top 25: The Boilermakers are right behind Louisville as the best surprise stories of the season. And guess which team beat the Cardinals? The Boilermakers. Gene Keady has pulled off the improbable with an amazing turnaround -- from a doormat last season to the Big Ten leaders into February. Purdue bounced back from a loss at Illinois to beat Indiana, Ohio State and win at Iowa last week. Purdue is getting go-to play out of Willie Deane and appears to have solved any scoring issues from a year ago. This might be Keady's best coaching job in a year that had once looked like could be his last on the bench. He's not going anywhere with this kind of success story.

XAVIER: The Musketeers are on a roll again and winning at Richmond was sweet vindication after getting beat at home by the Spiders.

ALABAMA: The Tide should get some credit for winning a game and pounding LSU further down in the standings.

GEORGIA: The Bulldogs get an average report card this week after losing at Vanderbilt and beating Mississippi State at home.

KENT STATE: The Golden Flashes won the critical game of the week in the MAC by beating Central Michigan

MICHIGAN: All good things must end, but the Wolverines got humbled with two losses last week.

FLORIDA STATE: The Seminoles lost to Virginia but then rebounded with a win over Duke Sunday.

DAYTON: The Flyers continue to cruise atop the A-10 standings and are looking more like a lock for the NCAAs every day.

ILLINOIS: The Illini beat Michigan at home, but then lost a close game at Michigan State for a decent week

MICHIGAN STATE: The Spartans faced must-wins in two games last week and won them both.

INDIANA: Losing twice on the road isn't awful but the Hoosiers still haven't played as consistently well as they did in Maui.

MANHATTAN: The Jaspers are the best team in the New York-New Jersey area. Not sure if that is a compliment to Manhattan or a slap at the rest of the schools.

OREGON STATE: Sweeping the L.A. schools is quite an accomplishment for Jay John. It also means the Beavers have a great shot to make the Pac-10 tournament.

OREGON: The Ducks got a split on the trip to SoCal, but this was the year to sweep USC and UCLA.

CALIFORNIA: Losing twice on the road in Arizona isn't a shock, but it might still hurt the Bears against Stanford.

ARIZONA: The Wildcats suffered a "Candygate" loss to Stanford but then came back to beat Cal.

ARIZONA STATE: Losing to Stanford pushed the Sun Devils closer to the bubble.

WYOMING: The Cowboys are still undefeated in the Mountain West after an impressive win at UNLV.

PEPPERDINE: Losing to Saint Mary's means the Waves aren't a real threat to Gonzaga this season in the WCC.

TENNESSEE: Ron Slay continues to lead the Vols in scoring as they still pull off potential NCAA wins like the one over Auburn last week.
