SETON HALL PIRATES
|
Louis Orr basically presented junior point guard Andre Barrett with the deed to the 2002-03 Pirates this offseason when he turned down the chance to have high-scoring guard Darius Lane return as a fifth-year senior. This team, Orr was making clear, belongs now to Barrett, whose tenants include a rising star on the wing in John Allen (11.4 ppg) and some underachievers whose time to shine is now: junior forwards Marcus Toney-El (4.7 ppg) and Damion Fray (3 ppg). The Pirates should be adept on the perimeter, where Barrett (16.9 ppg, 5 apg), Allen and Desmond Herod (3.7 ppg, 43.2 percent on 3-pointers) will roam. The mid-range and interior games are the question, what with the loss of 6-10 center Charles Manga from a team that didn't excel in those areas last season to begin with. Orr recruited with this hole in mind when he signed freshmen Eric Davis (6-9) and Kelly Whitney (6-7) and accepted Duke transfer Andre Sweet (6-6), who becomes eligible this season.
TOUGH ENOUGH..............................
Like a lot of Big East teams (Boston College, Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Notre Dame, Rutgers), Seton Hall has a strong backcourt with one or even two all-league candidates in Barrett, a sure-fire contender, and Allen, who has that kind of talent but is only a sophomore. The 5-8 Barrett is a matchup problem for almost every point guard who covers him.
TOUGH ENOUGH?..............................
Unlike some of those Big East teams mentioned above, Seton Hall has no interior game to speak of. The top returning player inside, 6-7 Greg Morton (3.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg), is a solid defender and leader, but not a player to worry opposing teams. The freshmen had better be ready to play.
BOTTOM LINE..............................
Seton Hall probably was better than its 12-18 record last season indicated, what with it suffering narrow losses to the likes of Duke and Michigan State and losing six league games by a touchdown or less. Seton Hall ought to be better than that record this season, too - but not by much. An NIT bid would be progress.
