No. 13 Trojans need rally to beat BYU-Hawaii

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

LAIE, Hawaii (AP) -- From the way Henry Bibby talked about his team, you would think No. 13 Southern California lost.

After the Trojans (8-0) defeated host Brigham Young University-Hawaii 86-74 Thursday night in the Yahoo! Sports Invitational, the second-year coach was anything but happy.

Brian Scalabrine scored 28 points, and Nate Hair got credit for his play as a reserve, but Bibby didn't mince words on his starting five, particularly Sam Clancy, Brandon Granville and David Bluthenthal.

"We didn't have everybody come to play," Bibby said. "David Bluthenthal was not there. Sam Clancy was not there. Brandon Granville was not there like he has been.

"It makes a difference in our play when we don't have people show up."

Clancy scored 17 points, Granville had 15 with seven assists and Bluthenthal finished with eight points and a team-leading seven rebounds.

"Brian kept us in the game. And I thought Nate Hair came off the bench and did a nice job," Bibby said.

"But we didn't show the killer instinct like we have to. We let teams hang around, and that's going to hit us on the road if we don't start doing that."

BYU-Hawaii coach Ken Wagner would gladly have Bibby's problems.

"They're awfully big and awfully quick," he said. "Scalabrine had a great game inside. We couldn't stop him.

"We didn't help ourselves. We didn't do a good job pressuring the ball outside so they could get it inside. We a few mental lapses and turnovers, and they hurt us."

Although the victory looked easy, the Trojans were challenged for most of the game by the Seasiders' long-range shooting. They made 14 3-pointers, with Brian Skinner getting six en route to 22 points.

But the inside dominance of Scalabrine and Clancy thwarted BYU-Hawaii. The Trojans scored 26 points in the paint and added another 16 off 21 turnovers by the Seasiders.

The host Seasiders gave USC a difficult time in the first few minutes, racing to a 17-11 lead.

But the Trojans, with Scalabrine scoring eight consecutive points, pulled even at 19 and then put together a 24-8 run that made it 43-31 at the half.

Granville had nine points and Clancy eight during the run, with Hair getting five points, three steals and a pair of rebounds.

Two 3-pointers each by Skinner and Dean Daley made it 49-43, but Clancy converted on a pair of three-point plays, and Scalabrine added another 10 points to keep BYU-Hawaii at bay.

Kerry Hendrickson's basket closed BYU-Hawaii to 70-64, but the Trojans scored the next eight points to put the game out of reach.

Daley finished with 10 points for the Seasiders.
