ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll

ESPN.com

School '00-01 Rec. Pts. Final '00-01 Comment
1. Duke (30) 35-4 774 1 No.1 is a no-brainer to us and 30 of 31 coaches; so who wasn't paying attention?
2. Illinois (1) 27-8 698 6 Johnson's ACL injury hurts toughness quotient, but doesn't affect Illini's abundance of athleticism.
3. Maryland 25-11 692 4 Opportunities to prove its the best will come early and often for Terps -- both in ACC and NCAA Tournament.
4. Kentucky 24-10 681 8 Easily the most talent we've seen gather together in blue jerseys -- outside of Durham, that is.
5. Florida 24-7 644 13 Haslem, Nelson, Bonner, Hamilton ... Time to get over who isn't in Gainesville. Donovan isn't worrying about it.
6. UCLA 23-9 595 12 For once, the Bruins' best players decided to stick around Pauley and see what they can do together
7. Kansas 26-7 581 7 Collison/Gooden form the best frontcourt in the country. Oh, and the Jayhawk guards aren't bad, either
8. Iowa 23-12 487 NR No other top 25 team's success rests as much on one player's health as Luke Recker and the Hawkeyes
9. Missouri 20-13 482 NR Will a full season of Rush (it hasn't happened yet) allow Tigers to live up to high expectations?
10. Saint Joseph's 26-7 469 24 Martelli can talk the talk, and we love to listen; these Hawks should be able to walk the walk
11. Virginia 20-9 413 21 Lost a little "Magic", but with Mason still around Cavs should continue to improve under Guillen
12. Michigan St. 28-5 345 3 OK, Spartans this high is out of respect for Izzo; But we were just as guilty last month
13. Memphis 21-15 307 NR Wagner may not even be the star by the end of the season; that's how much talent Coach Cal has gather down south
14. Georgetown 25-8 306 17 First time we've seen Hoyas ahead of BC; Coaches may finally be onto something here
15. Stanford 31-3 300 5 Expectations aren't as high as season ago; But Jacobsen & Monty will make sure Cardinal don't fall out of sight
16. Boston College 27-5 296 11 Bell's injury shouldn't be a factor in determining where Eagles finish, which may not be much higher than here
17. Temple 24-13 289 16 Chaney has set Owls up once again to fall early, but succeed late -- if Hawkins is around to help the process
18. Oklahoma St. 20-10 267 NR Maurice Baker may be the best player you don't know; Introduce yourself to Big Mo on Big Monday
19. North Carolina 26-7 155 10 Heels season could go either way from here depending on desire of Curry and Peppers to play hoops
20. Syracuse 25-9 152 18 All the 'Cuse does is win: 20-plus victories in 23 of the past 25 seasons; that'll keep you in the top 25
21. Indiana 21-13 140 NR Jeffries will need to take control of Hoosiers if Mike Davis' first "official" season is to be deemed a success
22. Texas 25-9 139 NR Chris Owens, meet T.J. Ford ... the freshman who'll make life much easier for you and the Longhorns offense
23. Oklahoma 26-7 135 19 Where's the best JUCO talent? Norman, this season. Once it blends, Sooners should be tough out come March
24. USC 24-10 108 14 Sleeper pick to win Pac-10; Sam Clancy is as solid as they come in the paint, but Granville's handle will be key
25. Fresno State 26-7 98 NR Lost Maddox, but kept Ely out of NBA, which keeps Bulldogs barking at those above them all the way to March
