KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Kansas freshmen are no longer freshmen. Just ask them.

Nick Collison and Drew Gooden, two members of the former freshmen class, each had 15 points Thursday night as the 10th-ranked Jayhawks beat Saint Louis 71-60, their 12th straight victory in Kemper Arena.

"We stepped it up," said Gooden, who also had 10 rebounds. "I guess that shows maturity. (Assistant) Coach (Neil Dougherty) told us we aren't freshmen any more. It's the new millennium. We're sophomores now."

Kansas (10-2) shook off the Billikens with a late rally in front of an intensely partisan crowd in what has become their home away from home from nearby Lawrence, Kan.

"We're happy with the last few minutes," Collison said. "We switched to the zone and I think they had trouble playing against the zone."

Justin Love had 19 points for Saint Louis (7-4) and Justin Tatum added 13.

Jeff Boschee's 3-pointer with 6:03 to play put Kansas ahead 56-55. Kenny Gregory put back a missed shot to make it 58-55, and Gooden then won a battle under the boards for a rebound and a putback that made it 60-55 with 4:38 remaining.

"I didn't think we were in it emotionally at all," Kansas coach Roy Williams said. "Boschee making the 3 right in front of our bench was big. I think that's the first time I felt we were in it. That's the first time I heard the crowd."

Boschee hit another 3-pointer and Collison made two free throws to put Kansas ahead 65-55 with 1:58 remaining.

The Billikens were scoreless after a stuff by Tatum with 7:47 remaining until Love hit a 3-pointer with 1:42 remaining.

"We played great for the first 35 minutes," Love said. "The last five minutes we couldn't hit anything. They changed their look with the zone."

The Jayhawks finished with 23 turnovers.

Eric Chenowith, Kansas' 7-foot center, spent most of the second half on the bench after he had a layup attempt blocked from behind early in the half. Chenowith was put back in with about 9½ minutes remaining, but was taken back out when he twice had rebounds taken away from him.

Chenowith finished with just four points and three rebounds.

Love, who scored 24 points in the Billikens' 78-64 win over Kansas in St. Louis last year, had 11 points in the first half as Saint Louis was within 34-32. The Jayhawks didn't have a field goal over the last 3:56 of the half.

Boschee, a sophomore, opened the game by hitting a 3-pointer, the 109th of his career, moving him past Paul Pierce and into 10th place on the Kansas career list.
