COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Brian Brown scored 16 of his career-high 21 points in the first half -- including 10 straight during a 25-2 blitz -- as Ohio State (No. 18 ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, No. 15 AP) beat Oakland 76-50 Monday night. Brown, whose previous best of 18 points came 11 days ago against Coastal Carolina, had almost that many at halftime while going 6-of-7 from the field. He finished 8-of-9, making both of his 3-point attempts and all three free throws. The sophomore guard also had four assists. The Buckeyes (7-2) came in shooting 44 percent from the field and had topped 50 percent only once. They had difficulty early against Oakland's box-and-one defense, but broke the game open with its muscle inside and quickness on the perimeter. Ohio State was 29-of-51 from the field (57 percent). Michael Redd, Ohio State's top scorer, didn't score in the opening half and finished with just four points. That ended a streak of 26 consecutive games in double figures. He had failed to score at least 10 points in only three of his 75 career games. George Reese came off the bench to score 14 points, Brent Darby had 12 and freshman Cobe Ocokoljic, who made his first career start in place of Reese, had 10. Mychal Covington led Oakland (2-10) with 15 points, while Brad Buddenborg added 11. The Golden Grizzlies' leading scorer, Dan Champagne, is out with a hand injury and is not expected to return until next month. Oakland, tied for 25th in Division I in 3-pointers made with 8.4 per game, hit 7-of-23 shots behind the arc. The Golden Grizzlies led 15-14 on Covington's driving layup with 9:38 left in the half, but missed all but one of their last 12 shots of the half. Brown fueled the Buckeyes' 20-2 run to halftime, scoring 10 points in a row on a pair of 3-pointers, a foul-line jumper and two free throws. Reese scored twice and assisted on Ken Johnson's dunk as the Buckeyes used a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. Oakland's only basket came on a layup by Sebastien Bellin with 1 second left on the shot clock. Ohio State reeled off the first five points of the second half on Redd's layup and Penn's 3-pointer.
