HONOLULU (AP) -- UCLA likes to play an up-tempo game, which was just fine with South Florida.

The Bruins (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No. 18 AP) ran and ran Thursday night, but had to hustle to beat South Florida 103-98 in overtime in the third-place game of the Pearl Harbor Invitational.

Colorado State beat San Jose State 61-57 in Thursday's championship game.

"It was just what the doctor ordered," relieved UCLA coach Steve Lavin said. "The perfect remedy coming off last night's very disappointing loss to Colorado State (55-54).

"It was an up-tempo game which is obviously to our liking, rather than the grind-it-out style of Colorado State or Princeton. There are things we need to clean up defensively and offensively as well. But the energy, enthusiasm and passion and work ethic the kids demonstrated tonight were the high point."

The Bulls (5-4) matched UCLA (6-2) point for point, coming from 10 down with seven minutes left to force overtime.

Jerome Moiso scored five of his 20 points in the extra session for UCLA.

There were 15 lead changes and seven ties in the first 12 minutes and 21 lead changes and 17 ties overall.

Earl Watson, who finished with 20 points, appeared to have the game-winner in regulation when he knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 88-85 with 17 seconds left. South Florida's B.B. Waldon, who led a 16-7 run in the final minutes, responded with his own 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Watson's 3-pointer with 3:15 left put UCLA ahead for good at 94-91.

"You have to give Watson credit," South Florida coach Seth Greenberg said. "He hit two huge shots and made the big plays."

Lavin said he hopes Watson's tournament performance will carry over into the Pac-10 season.

"Earl played his best basketball this season the last two nights," Lavin said. "He showed great poise in running the offense and making sure everyone got touches.

"He hit some big 3-point shots. He took a quantum leap in his growth and development as the team captain of this basketball team."

Greenberg also noted the work of Moiso.

"We let Moiso catch it a little too deep," he said. "He kind of dominated down the stretch on the interior."

UCLA got off to a hot start in the first 20 minutes, making 22-of-36 shots to lead 54-49. But the Bulls got hot over the final 20 minutes, hitting 14-of-25 shots.

Watson and Moiso each finished with 20 points with Jason Kapono adding 17. For South Florida, Waldon had 23 and Cedric Smith 18.

"We've got to improve out intensity," Greenberg said in assessing his team's play to date. "We grew up a little bit. We still have the potential to be pretty good.

"We played with a little bit of intensity tonight."
