WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) -- Purdue (No. 23 ESPN/USA Today, No. 25 AP) paid a heavy price for its 86-65 victory over Coppin State on Saturday. Senior Brian Cardinal fractured his left thumb two minutes into the second half and did not return. Cardinal, who entered the game averaging 14 points and seven rebounds, is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.
"It will probably be interesting to say the least," Purdue coach Gene Keady said about Cardinal's absence. "We'll get leadership from other guys and go forward. We might put a cast on him like Morris Peterson had at Michigan State and it might get him back a little sooner. But I'm more interested in the kid getting healed right." Greg McQuay led Purdue with 20 points and eight rebounds. Jorge Cajigas led the Eagles (2-7) with 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting. The Boilermakers (6-2), who never trailed in the game, hit 55 percent of their shots, blocked seven Coppin State attempts, and had a 35-25 rebounding adcantage. "Their inside play just killed us. They got too many easy baskets," Coppin State coach Fang Mitchell said. "It's just the fact that that has been our weakness. They just dominated us inside, basket after basket. We allowed them to get into good position too many times." Purdue built a 59-43 lead on free throws by Chad Kerkhof and Carson Cunningham off a pair of Coppin State technical fouls. Coppin State's Tyran Watkins was called for a flagrant technical foul with 11:21 remaining and ejected from the game for blocking Kerkhof's layup attempt after he stole an errant pass and ran the length of the court. Cajigas also drew a technical during a verbal exchange between Watkins and members of the Boilermakers squad. The technical fouls resulted in a 16-7 Boilermaker run as Purdue built a 71-48 lead on a tip-in by John Allison with 7:44 left. "That (flagrant technical foul) sparked us," Kerkhof said. "(Watkins) hit me pretty hard and the rest of it was excessive." Cunningham added 14 points and seven assists for the Boilermakers. Mike Robinson added 11 points, and Cardinal finished with 10. Kofi Pointer had 18 points for the Eagles.
