PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- St. John's, playing its second game
without suspended point guard Erick Barkley, beat Providence 61-46 Tuesday night.
Bootsy Thornton, one of several players wearing band-aids on
their left cheeks as a sign of solidarity with Barkley, scored 19
points to lead the Red Storm (15-6, 7-3 Big East). Barkley has been wearing a large band-aid on his left cheek after being scratched during practice early in the season.

Prior to the game on Tuesday, the NCAA ruled Barkley ineligible for three games for a rules violation. The violation was exchanging cars with a family friend, two sources familiar with the case have told The Associated Press. The school is appealing and said it expects to hear results of that by Friday.
Barkley, who also sat out Saturday's 59-58 victory over Boston
College, is the team's leading scorer, averaging 18.7 points per
game. The Red Storm play Villanova on Saturday. The next game he will be eligible for is Feb. 15, at Boston College.
Chudney Gray, who started at the point in Barkley's absence, had 12 points and Anthony Glover added 10.
Erron Maxey had 11 points for Providence (8-15, 1-9), which lost
its ninth straight.
Providence pulled within 31-26 early in the second half before
the Red Storm went on a 14-4 run in which Glover scored seven
points. The Friars never got closer than nine points the rest of
the way.
The Red Storm took a 25-13 lead following a flurry of five
consecutive 3-pointers, three by Thornton. The Friars closed within
27-21 at halftime.
