Longhorn notes (entering Super Regional)

  • Defending national champion (Texas) faces the No. 1 overall seed (FSU).
  • The Horns can become only the fourth team to win consecutive national titles...USC ('70-74), Stanford ('87, '88) and LSU ('96, '97).
  • One more win will tie Augie Garrido with the man he succeeded as head coach of the Longhorns, Cliff Gustafson, atop the all-time list for coaching victories. By advancing to the CWS, Garrido will become the winningest coach in Division I baseball history.
  • Dustin Majewski leads the Big 12 in RBI (81), Omar Quintanilla leads the Big 12 in doubles (26), and Tim Moss leads the conference in triples (9).
  • Majewski was drafted in the 12th round by the Red Sox last year and decided to come back for his senior season. He was named MVP of the Big 12 Tournament and Austin Regional both last year and this year.
  • Texas leads the Big 12 in team ERA (3.45).
  • Huston Street has appeared in 36 games and leads the Big 12 in ERA (1.34) and saves (12). He has an 8-0 record. Street was the College World Series MVP as a freshman last year after recording the save in all four Texas wins in Omaha.

    Florida State Seminoles
NCAA Tournament appearance: 41st (26th in a row)
    CWS appearances (last): 18 (2000)
    2003 Home record: 30-3
Prominent MLB alumni: J.D. Drew, Paul Wilson, Doug Mientkiewicz

    Seminole notes (entering Super Regional)

  • The Seminoles are seeking their 12th trip to the College World Series in the last 18 years. FSU has been 18 times overall, which is the most appearances ever without a national title to show for it.
  • Head coach Mike Martin has reached the NCAA Tournament in all 24 seasons at FSU.
  • Pitching staff leads the ACC and ranks fourth nationally in ERA (2.84) … 9 team shutouts … all three starters are left-handed and have a combined 33-4 record this year.
  • The Seminoles lead the ACC in scoring with 8.6 runs per game
  • SS Stephen Drew is the younger brother of J.D. and Tim; leads the ACC in triples (8) and runs scored (83); national freshman of the year in 2002.
  • C Tony Richie is a defensive star: one passed ball, 7 pickoffs and thrown out 44% of runners this season. Oh, by the way, he's also hitting .363 with 75 RBI.
