Coach K: Price to be paid for change

Associated Press

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski says the Atlantic Coast Conference hasn't distinguished itself as it tries to expand with three teams from the Big East, and he supports a plan to add only Miami.

"I hope we mend fences because we've obviously gone into another person's yard with our tractor-trailer and knocked down a few trees,'' Krzyzewski said Tuesday.

The nine-team ACC voted May 16 to pursue Miami, Boston College and Syracuse. However, school chancellors and presidents haven't been able to come to a consensus on expansion plans over the last month.

The attempt to raid the Big East of three of its eight football-playing schools has also produced a lawsuit from that conference and plenty of ill will up and down the East Coast.

There is a price to be paid when you make a change. You might move into a great house, but there is a price to be paid for that ... I've never seen an analysis of that, and when you don't see it you wonder if people don't want you to see the hidden costs.

The Hall of Fame coach poked fun at the league, who has also had talks about a plan to add Virginia Tech as a 13th team.

"What is it today? Is Army coming in?'' Krzyzewski said.

Duke, North Carolina and Virginia are believed to be against expanding to 12 teams. In the last week, UNC chancellor James Moeser said he would vote for adding just football powerhouse Miami.

Krzyzewski said Tuesday his school would do the same. Duke President Nan Keohane did not return a telephone call seeking comment.

At least seven of nine votes by the schools are needed to expand.

"There is a price to be paid when you make a change. You might move into a great house, but there is a price to be paid for that. You have to sell your house, you move, your kids are going to a different school,'' Krzyzewski said. "I've never seen an analysis of that, and when you don't see it you wonder if people don't want you to see the hidden costs.''

He said the ACC should have pushed the NCAA harder to change a rule that requires a conference to have 12 teams before allowing a football playoff game.

"It's a rule. Moses didn't bring it down from the mountain top. It's not etched in stone,'' he said. "Why not attack the rule and say, 'Look, why can't we have a playoff with 10 teams?'''

He also questioned the addition of Syracuse and Boston College, two Northeast schools well out of the ACC's region.

"To me, there's a reason why the United States doesn't have a state in France or Venezuela,'' he said. "We don't belong there. That doesn't mean we don't deal with them.

"There is a lot to be said about your geographic landscape. You don't just go in and say, 'I'm going to take you, you and you,' and not have sensitivity. I don't think we've distinguished ourselves in doing that.''

Still, Krzyzewski believes the ACC will rebound from negative publicity by some who have painted the league as a corporate raider. He also said the recent debate among the schools about the principles, values and tradition of the 50-year-old league is a useful lesson.

"I would think this might be good to let some people know there are some of these intangibles in our league,'' he said. "We're a great conference. If anyone has an attitude they should get out, go somewhere else. The people that have represented the schools over time have been great people and that's what we should expect to happen now.''
