Redd expected to take in first practice Friday

Associated Press

MILWAUKEE -- Michael Redd is expected to travel with the Milwaukee Bucks to Dallas to face the Mavericks on Saturday.

Redd had a physical Thursday and plans to practice for the first time at training camp Friday. The Bucks matched Dallas' four-year, $12 million offer to the restricted free agent this week.

Team owner Herb Kohl took his time before deciding to add to his $53 million payroll, which is now about $4 million above the luxury tax threshold expected to take effect after this season.

"He's instant offense,'' forward Anthony Mason said. "The way he played for us last year, he earned what he got.''

As a reserve last season, Redd averaged 11.4 points and 21.1 minutes. He shot 44.4 percent on 3-pointers, eighth in the league.

The Bucks won't have to fret over a big drop-off when starting guard Ray Allen needs a breather. They'll be able to pair Allen with Redd at times.

"He's going to give us more of an offensive threat on the floor,'' Allen said. "He makes my job easier. He's going to help me get shots. He's tough on defenders and knows the system. He's perfect for our system.''
