Cuban fined, suspended for gesture

Nov. 14, 2000: Cuban fined $5,000 for criticizing an official after a win against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Nov. 2, 2000: Cuban fined $25,000 after verbally abusing and publicly criticizing officials after a Sonics game.

NEW YORK – Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban passed the half-million dollar mark in fines on Friday when the NBA charged him $100,000 for making a derogatory gesture during a game earlier this week.

Cuban was also suspended for one game for making the gesture and publicly criticizing officials during Dallas' 111-106 loss to the Phoenix Suns last Wednesday. He was to serve the suspension Friday night when the Mavericks are at home against Sacramento.

The fine was Cuban's seventh this season and pushed his total to $505,000 since Nov. 14.

"If it's about me having to sit on my hands and not stand up and not jump up and down when something happens, that's craziness," Cuban said. "That's craziness. Why should I have to be any different than a normal fan? The game is still going to be the game regardless of what Mark Cuban says or does."

Most of Cuban's fines have resulted from his complaints over officiating. NBA commissioner David Stern slapped Cuban with a whopping $250,000 penalty, the largest individual fine in league history, for his "outbursts" and "actions" following a Jan. 4 loss to Detroit.

His first suspension stemmed from a Mavericks' promotion that offers free chalupas when they reach 100 points at home.

Instead of trying to run out the clock in the final seconds of a blowout, Dallas attempted five shots during three possessions in an attempt to reach the century mark. That infuriated the Cavaliers and Cleveland's Wesley Person and Gary Trent got into a brief shoving match.

At that point, Cuban ran on to the floor, although he backed off when the players were separated.

During a Jan. 10 game, Cuban was hit with a $100,000 fine for taking a seat on the baseline in the media area.

Last March, Cuban bought the Dallas Mavericks and the club's new arena for $280 million, a record for an NBA franchise. He has become one of the league's most visible owners, attending most games and making himself accessible to the media.
