Karl fined $50,000 for criticizing Sonics

NEW YORK – Milwaukee Bucks coach George Karl, fired by Seattle after the 1997-98 season, was fined $50,000 by the NBA on Wednesday for his criticism of the SuperSonics and general manager Wally Walker.

"Sixty wins wasn't enough for the people in Seattle," Karl said recently, referring to his record with the Sonics and their demise since being forced out.

"My recommendation would be to blow the management up and keep the team. The team's pretty good. I guarantee you, that's why Gary (Payton) is so mad. The wrong people are being held responsible. Competitors get upset about that."

Karl also was fined $25,000 in March 1999 for disparaging remarks about his former employers.

Karl is negotiating with Milwaukee for a contract extension that could pay him $14 million over two years plus a 1 percent ownership valued at $125 million.

Seattle plays at Milwaukee on Thursday night.
