PHILADELPHIA -- A bobble-head version of Allen Iverson
caused a commotion at the Philadelphia 76ers' game Friday night.
The Sixers gave away 5,000 bobble-head dolls of Iverson, the MVP
of last week's NBA All-Star game, before they played the Los
Angeles Clippers. The dolls were in such demand that a one was
already on an Internet auction site one hour after the game
started.
"The calls have been coming fast and furious from all over the
country and the Internet," said Dave Coskey, 76ers senior vice
president. "People were even renting kids, offering free tickets
if you brought a kid with you and gave up the bobblehead."
The team presented coupons -- to be redeemed inside the arena for
the doll -- to fans 14-and-under as they entered the building, and
beefed up security at all entrances. But that didn't stop fans from
complaining.
One fan was ejected after threatening a Sixers employee, and
another refused to accept his doll when he noticed that it was
missing an earring.
"The kids have big smiles on their faces when they get it, but
first you have to wade through bobblemania," Coskey said.
The team experienced similar mania with other giveaways,
including Beanie Babies, comic books and puzzles.
"We try to do things that add value to the ticket," Coskey
said.
The promotion worked as the game drew a sellout crowd of 20,592,
the largest to see the Clippers on the road this season.
