Sixers to honor Barkley in March

PHILADELPHIA -- Charles Barkley, whose career began and
ended in Philadelphia, will become the seventh player in 76ers
history to have his number retired.

Barkley's number 34 will be retired March 30 during halftime of
the Sixers' game against the Golden State Warriors in the First
Union Center.
Barkley won the NBA's MVP Award in 1993, is a five-time All-NBA
first-team selection and was a member of 11 All-Star teams. He
began his career with the 76ers in 1984 and was traded to the
Phoenix Suns after eight seasons. In 1996, he was traded to the
Rockets after four seasons in Phoenix.
"My years in Philadelphia were very special to me," Barkley
said. "Now, to have my jersey retired, hung next to some of the
greatest players of all time ... I consider this an incredible
honor."
Barkley retired with the Houston Rockets. Less than eight
minutes into his farewell game in Philadelphia in December 1999, he
ruptured his quadriceps tendon in his knee and prematurely ended
the season he had said would be his last.
Barkley's number will be raised to the First Union Center
rafters, joining Hal Greer (No. 15, Nov. 19, 1976), Billy
Cunningham (No. 32, Dec. 17, 1976), Bobby Jones (No. 24, Nov. 7,
1986), Julius Erving (No. 6, April 18, 1988), Wilt Chamberlain (No.
13, March 18, 1991), and Maurice Cheeks (No. 10, Feb. 6, 1995).
Former Sixers public address announcer Dave Zinkoff had his
microphone retired on March 25, 1986.
