Knicks to miss starting point guard

NEW YORK -- The injuries for the New York Knicks keep
mounting as guard Charlie Ward had arthroscopic surgery
Monday to clear loose cartilage out of his right knee. The Knicks' starting point guard is expected to miss 6-8 weeks of action.
Ward sat out Saturday's 79-75 loss to
the Toronto Raptors. He also missed Wednesday's loss
at Atlanta, ending a streak of 192 consecutive games.
In placing Ward on the injured list Monday, New York claimed guard Rick Brunson off waivers
from the Boston Celtics and waived center Jonathan Kerner.
A six-year NBA veteran, Ward is averaging a team-high 4.5
assists with 7.9 points per game in 12 starts this season. But
the Knicks are only 27th in the NBA in scoring with just over 85
points per contest.
On Saturday, the Knicks activated center Luc Longley and
placed center Felton Spencer on the IL.
Acquired from Phoenix on Sept. 20 as part of a four-team,
12-player trade that sent Patrick Ewing to Seattle, the 7-2
Longley suffered a knee injury while playing for Australia
against France in the Olympics on Sept. 29 and has not
played since.
Longley, a member of three consecutive NBA championship teams
with the Chicago Bulls from 1996-98, spent the last two seasons
of his nine-year NBA career with the Phoenix Suns and averaged
6.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in 19.7 minutes.
Spencer suffered a sprained right knee against Atlanta. He is
averaging 1.8 points and 2.6 rebounds in five games.
