Hornets beat poor-shooting Pacers

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Charlotte Hornets shut down Reggie Miller and Jalen Rose, although they claim they didn't do anything special.

The Pacers' backcourt stars were limited to 11 points apiece on 10-for-33 shooting as the Hornets defeated Indiana 77-66 Tuesday night – the lowest point total by the Pacers since they were held to a franchise-low of 55 by San Antonio on March 29, 1998.

Charlotte's Eddie Robinson (32) is fouled by Travis Best in the fourth quarter of the Hornets' 77-66 win over Indiana.

"We tried to contest all the shots that they took, but basically they just missed shots. There was nothing that we did," coach Paul Silas said.

Jamal Mashburn had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Hornets in a game in which both teams looked sluggish coming off the All-Star break.

Both teams shot poorly from the field, connecting on just 34 percent of their attempts. But the Hornets outrebounded Indiana 59-41, with P.J. Brown grabbing 13 rebounds.

"Coming off the All-Star break, I know that from being in the league for seven years, you're going to expect to be a little sluggish. We just tried to keep the pressure up," Mashburn said. "We played consistent defense and rebounded the ball and made big plays on the defensive end."

Al Harrington led Indiana with 12 points and Miller had 11 – just enough to move past George Gervin into 23rd place on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

Miller was 5-for-16 from the field, hitting just 1-for-8 from 3-point range.

"Just bad shooting," Miller said. "We got great looks, but on our side, it had nothing to do with the outcome of the game. We started the game good, but we've got to play with a little bit more passion, a little more emotion, and definitely more desperation."

Rose was 5-for-17 from the field and like Miller, attempted no free throws as the Pacers consistently went to jump shots.

"In a game like this, it's basically going to come down to loose balls, it's going to come down to rebounds, the intangable things in a game, the dirty work. It's not something we're doing right now," Rose said.

Indiana's 28 second-half points was a season-low.

Reserve Derrick Coleman contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds to the victory, while Baron Davis had 13. David Wesley scored 12.

It was the first victory for the Hornets in five trips here, while the defending Eastern Conference champion Pacers lost for the seventh time in eight games and fell seven games below .500 for the first time since the 1993-94 season.

The Hornets pulled away in the second half, taking the lead for good with nine consecutive points late in the third quarter. A dunk by Coleman began the run, Wesley followed with a 3-pointer, Brown made a layup and Mashburn's 17-footer made it 57-49 with 1:10 left in the period.

Charlotte opened its biggest lead of 14 points twice in the fourth quarter and then survived a 10-2 Indiana run that made it 70-64 with 4:03 to play.

A turnover by Rose and a missed 3-point attempt by Miller followed, and Charlotte responded with a 3-pointer by Davis and a jumper by Mashburn to end the threat.

Charlotte had taken its first double-digit lead lead of the night in the third period, outscoring the Pacers 20-14 when Indiana had only six baskets with seven turnovers, including five in five consecutive possessions.

Charlotte led 42-38 at halftime as both teams struggled from the field. The Hornets missed eight consecutive shots while shooting 29 percent (7-for-24) in the first quarter, while Indiana shot 39 percent (9-for-23).

Game notes
