Pistons extend Nets' skid to six games

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- As triple-doubles go, Jerry Stackhouse had the type that no NBA player ever would want.

Stackhouse had 30 points, 10 assists and 10 turnovers but played flawlessly after committing his final miscue with 10 minutes left as the Detroit Pistons beat the New Jersey Nets 112-103 on Wednesday night.

"As long as we get the win, I'll take it," he said of his statistical accomplishment. "We were fortunate, really. We had too many mistakes, but a lot of guys made big contributions. Our bench really carried us. Those are the guys that won the game tonight."

Jerome Williams added a season-high 15 points and 17 rebounds, while Ben Wallace had 14 rebounds and six blocked shots. Dana Barros added 17 points for the Pistons, who used a huge edge on rebounding to make up for their sloppiness as they handed the Nets their sixth straight loss.

Johnny Newman had 21 points for the Nets, who were outrebounded 58-32 and lost Kenyon Martin to an ejection in the second quarter.

"They have guys like Wallace and Williams who are just relentless, and we did an awful job of keeping them off the boards," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "It was hard for me to watch."

The game was tied 84-84 before Williams gave Detroit the lead for good by scoring on a putback after grabbing his 15th rebound. Stackhouse scored on a drive less than two minutes later for a 91-84 lead, and the Nets got no closer than three the rest of the way.

It was just the third victory in the last 14 games for the Pistons, who have won all three of their meetings with New Jersey this season.

The Pistons committed 23 turnovers to the Nets' season-low eight, but all 23 came in the first 38 minutes.

"One of the key things we discussed before the game was not to commit turnovers, but we didn't do that," coach George Irvine said. "We're not a very consistent team, so maybe that explains it."

Martin was ejected during the second quarter by official Ed F. Rush, who hit Martin with two quick technicals after he complained about a foul call.

The loss of Martin further hindered the Nets under the boards, and the Pistons closed the first half with a 22-8 run following Martin's ejection for a 56-49 halftime lead.

"There were a couple times in the second half when I was looking down the bench hoping he was there," Scott said. "He just reacted to a call and said a few bad words."

The Nets tied it at 62 on a jump hook by Aaron Williams with 7:12 left in the third, and it stayed close until Mikki Moore dunked with 7:14 left in the fourth to start a 9-0 run that gave Detroit its 91-84 lead.

Game notes
Stephon Marbury, who planned to go to the Bahamas during the All-Star break, gave away his plane tickets, hotel room and $500 in spending money in a random drawing held before tipoff. The trip was won by Norman Raymond, 55, of Roseland, N.J., a season-ticket holder since 1981. Raymond, senior vice president of a brokerage firm, said he was unsure if he would go on the trip himself or give it away. ... Stackhouse's turnovers were a season-high. The NBA record is 14 by John Drew of the Atlanta Hawks in 1978.
