Kings can't cope with injuries

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- The Golden State Warriors have had to deal with injuries all season. So they had little sympathy for the shorthanded Sacramento Kings.

Jason Caffey had 20 of his 26 points in the first half as the Warriors beat the injury-depleted Kings 111-99 on Monday night.

Caffey went 11-of-16 from the field and had 14 rebounds as the Warriors overpowered the slumping Kings, who were missing starters Chris Webber and Nick Anderson.

Chris Mills added 20 points and John Starks had 20 points and 12 assists for the Warriors, who shot 52 percent and led by as many as 23 points late in the third period.

Every player projected to start for Golden State this season has missed at least one game, and three of those players -- center Erick Dampier, guard Mookie Blaylock and forward Antawn Jamison -- were sidelined Monday night.

"How can we feel sorry for them? We've had injuries all year," Mills said. "They came out with a weird lineup, but that's something we can't feel too sorry about."

Corliss Williamson had 24 points for the Kings, who have lost eight of 12 after winning nine of their first 10 games this season. Sacramento, which has averaged 16 turnovers, had 24 Monday night and lost its third straight game.

"We're struggling, so we have to find a way of going in a different direction," Sacramento's Vlade Divac said. "We are careless sometimes, and that's what happened today."

Jason Williams had 10 points and 11 assists for Sacramento, while guard Tony Delk had 11 rebounds. Delk, who averages seven minutes off the bench, made the start in place of Anderson and played 45 minutes for the shorthanded Kings.

Webber (strained neck) and Anderson (inflamed left knee) did not make the short trip, and neither did backup point guard Darrick Martin (flu). Sacramento dressed only nine players.

"We've just got to try to get through this and get a win somewhere," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "You turn it over like we did -- we weren't catching the ball -- and then if you're soft defensively you're going to be down and you're not going to win on the road."

Leading by 10 at halftime, the Warriors expanded their margin to 23 points with 1:31 left in the third period against an exhausted Kings team and led 94-76 entering the fourth quarter.

"It's very difficult in this league to play without your first-line players," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "Our big guys were so effective inside and our guards did a good job of finding them."

Golden State maintained a comfortable lead throughout the fourth period as both teams cleared their benches. The 111 points were a season high for Golden State.

The Warriors took a 31-17 lead with 3:07 remaining in the first quarter and led 37-27 after one period. The 37 points were a season high for any quarter by Golden State.

Golden State led 62-52 at halftime, shooting 58 percent and taking advantage of 15 Sacramento turnovers in the Warriors' biggest half of the season. Caffey had 20 points in the first half, while Williamson had 12 for the Kings.

Game notes
