INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Rik Smits and Dale Davis scored eight points in an 18-6 run in the third quarter as the Indiana Pacers opened their exhibition season with a 95-80 win over Denver on Wednesday night. Smits, who was 4-of-10 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, finished with 14 points. Reggie Miller scored 14 points in 23 minutes and Austin Croshere scored 13 in 17 minutes for Indiana. Denver, which lost 86-84 at Chicago on Tuesday, is 0-2. Ron Mercer, who scored 31 points on Tuesday, led Denver again with 15. He was 6-of-16 from the field. Johnny Taylor added 13 and Raef LaFrentz 12. James Posey scored 11 points and led the Nuggets with eight rebounds. The Nuggets led 32-25 early in the second quarter before Al Harrington scored six points to fuel runs of 11-0 and 21-4 that put the Pacers ahead 46-32 three minutes before the half.
