Jazz gang up on lowly Warriors

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Karl Malone scored 22 points and John Stockton was in classic form, scoring 15 points and handing out nine assists as the Utah Jazz beat the Golden State Warriors 114-97 on Friday night.

Jeff Hornacek scored 16 points, reserve Armen Gilliam added 11 and Olden Polynice had 10 as the Jazz had no difficulty dispatching the punchless Warriors, who lost their eighth straight.

Golden State cut its deficit to 89-78 with 28.3 seconds left in the third quarter when Mookie Blaylock scored after a scramble for the ball.

But Stockton, whose deliberate work at point guard helped him become the NBA's career steals and assists leader, gave Utah its 15th straight victory over Golden State with a keen sense of court awareness.

Stockton worked the clock at the other end before hitting a jumper in the lane with 3.1 seconds to go. Then, he intercepted the ball when Donyell Marshall threw a lazy inbounds pass to Larry Hughes.

Stockton's flip over Marshall's arms came with seven-tenths of a second on the clock and gave the Jazz a 93-78 lead entering the final period. From there, the lead never fell below double digits.

Hughes scored 27 points for the Warriors. Marshall had 18 points and 16 rebounds while Blaylock scored 16 and Jason Caffey had 10.

Everyone was involved for the Jazz on both ends, and Utah coach Jerry Sloan gave his reserves plenty of playing time. The Warriors, on the other hand, usually looked to Hughes and nobody else.

Greg Ostertag blocked six shots as the Jazz held Golden State to 36 percent shooting (33-of-91). Utah also hit 31-of-36 from the free-throw line, led by NBA leader Hornacek, who went 4-of-4.

Game notes
Sloan said he and Malone cleared up differences stemming from an argument Wednesday during the Philadelphia game. Malone became upset after being called to the bench. ... The Warriors went 1-16 in March. ... Polynice, a 25 percent free-throw shooter, made his first four. ... Seven of Utah's 11 remaining regular-season games are on the road, beginning Saturday night in Denver.
