Giants fans give midseason report | |||||
We told you what we thought of the Giants' first-half performance, now you've told us. Here is what you had to say about our reports and what the Giants have to do in the second half:
On the Giant's flagship station they were talking one night about a good nickname for Jeff Kent... I thought the best one was "The Silent Partner". Gives props to both Kent and Bonds because the two together are just an outstanding combo at 3-4.
Mike Woginrich Oakland, Calif.
Giants are a force. Once Bonds gets in form again from his injury the Diamondbacks better look out. Livan Hernandez and Russ Ortiz will pick up the slack from the first half to get some more wins. Paul Canton, Ohio
city = subj = Rockies message = A change of scenery has helped the Giants tremendously. Sure they had some growing pains at Pac Bell but now it's very hard to stop them there. The Giants will contend for the West title against an injury riddled Arizona team. The only problem is the Giants pitching curse. Rueter needs to stay consistant, Estes continues to show he has returned, and Rags needs to get Ortiz back on track. The Giants have the offense and defense to back up the pitching. They will need to step it up a notch now or we will see another disasterous July and second half like last year and we Giants fans don't want to go through that again. Dale Van De Bogart Elizabethtown, N.C.
It's becoming common place to say Dusty Baker has done it again. I truly believe he is the glue that keeps this team competing for the division year after year. Don't get me wrong -- they have very good players and no glaring weakness. But he seems to get the best out of every player from the mediocre to the stars. Division champion looks good for them. And at the very least, it's the wild card.
Jerry Gutfeld
My Giants should enjoy a great second half. But until they secure a real "stud ace", I do not think their fortunes will be realized. Jim Maybie Sacramento, Calif.
I feel for Dusty Baker in that once again the pitching continues to be the one problem. At the begining of the season he had said that if the starting five could get 15 wins apiece we had a chance. Well Ortiz is proving this to be an impossibilty. Also our mid relief and Nen have been major disappointments. Jeff Kent once again is the most underrated second baseman in the league and Bonds, well ... Barry is Barry. Jeanette SchockSan Clemente, Calif.
I do not see how the year that Barry Bonds is having could be a suprise. He has never shown any signs of slowing down. He has been the best overall player in baseball since he made it to the major league level and he will continue to be until he retires.

Muliple choice question: Which one is right? a) Jeff Kent leading the league in RBI. b) Jeff Kent as MVP of National League. c) The Giants in the playoffs. d) All of the above. How about (d) Mitch G. Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The biggest concern is consistent starting pitching. Their offense -- first in the NL in batting at .294 as a team -- can come through more often than not, but their pitching has been the main reason they've been streaky this year. It's not like they're not getting run support. Ortiz is having the same sophomore slump that Estes had, and even as hot as Livan has been recently, it's only brought him up to, what, 7-7? Reuter has some great outings ... and some terrible ones. The most reliable starter is -- surprise -- Shawn Estes. Please, let's not talk about Mark Gardner. If they can pull their rotation together, there's no reason they can't catch Arizona. Aram Cretan Palo Alto, Calif.
Go Giants! I wish I was back in Bay Area. Remember those days at Caddlestick's fog. Pac-Bell Park ... friends tell me that this is a paradise ball park....is it really.....it seems like it from the AFKN TV. Hey Barry and Jeff? How about hitting some home runs this way across Pacific Ocean? Go Giants! Steven Oh Seoul, South Korea I believe that they will catch Arizona if the proper trades are made for quality pitching. Giants have recently been a second half team and will be there in the end. Ken Bracken Temecula, Calif. | ALSO SEE Midseason report: San Francisco Giants MLB midseason reports |
