How severe is Nomar Garciaparra's wrist injury?

March 26: Garciaparra received some bad news on Monday as a hand specialist he went to see at the University of Virginia informed him that surgery would be the best option in order relieve severe pain in the shortstop's right wrist. "I think he has reached a stage where he can't tolerate (the pain) anymore," Dr. Frank McCue said of Garciaparra. "Swinging the bat is one of the hardest things on the wrist." Garciaparra and the Red Sox will now have to decide whether to heed McCue's advice and have the surgery, which could sideline the shortstop for anywhere between 10-16 weeks, or play through the pain. |

Could Derek Jeter miss Opening Day?
|
March 26: Yes, it's possible. Jeter has fought the injury bug throughout spring training and is presently on the shelf with a strained right quadriceps muscle. Jeter, who has played in just five games this spring, is expected to resume running on Tuesday and if he doesn't report any problems could be a designated hitter in a minor-league game later in the day. If the injury continues to nag Jeter, he could very well begin the season on the disabled list. |

Is John Vander Wal headed out of Pittsburgh?

March 26: The Mariners desperately want Vander Wal and are willing to part with Brett Tomko in order to get him. But, as ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports, it appears a deal won't happen because the Mariners are also asking the Pirates to take Al Martin (and his $5-million contract) back in the trade, which the Pirates simply can't do. Thus, in order for a deal to happen a third team will have to get involved in the discussions. |

Is Manny Ramirez's hamstring injury serious or not?

March 22: If the Garciaparra news isn't bad enough for Red Sox fans than here's more. According to a report in the Boston Herald, Ramirez may also miss Opening Day as he is suffering from a strained right hamstring. He initially injured the hamstring while attempting to catch a fly ball last week and than tweaked it again while running the bases on Wednesday. For the time being, Ramirez is listed as out indefinitely. |

Where do Bobby Higginson and the Tigers stand on a contract extension?

March 21: Higginson rejected the Tigers' latest contract offer of less than $36M over four years, sticking to his demand of accepting nothing less than a four-year, $40 million deal. What makes matters even stickier for the Tigers is that Higginson, who is entering the final year of his contract, has set Opening Day as the deadline for when he will sign a contract extension. He said at the beginning of spring training that if something doesn't happen by then he won't negotiate during the season and will become a free agent at the end of the year. |

Is Jay Buhner done?
|
March 21: Quite possibly, yes. In his first at-bat of the spring on Tuesday, Buhner re-injured the left arch that had kept him out of all games to that point. Retirement is very possible and Buhner admitted as much. "I'm done. (And) at the very least, I've got to go home and think about things," Buhner told the Seattle Times. For the time being, Al Martin will take Buhner's place and become the Mariners' everyday left fielder. |

Will the Mets end up with Jose Cruz?

March 19: Even though Bobby Valentine says he's comfortable with his outfield of Benny Agbayani, Jay Payton and Timo Perez, we know deep down he has concerns. So does the front office, which explains the latest rumor that had Cruz and a Blue Jays pitcher going for Glendon Rusch. A Toronto paper reported the Jays would then play Vernon Wells in center. However, the Mets may fear their rotation isn't deep enough to trade Rusch. The Jays may also be interested in Pedro Astacio, Ron Villone or Masato Yoshii of the Rockies. |
