TOKOROZAWA, Japan -- The Yomiuri Giants won the Japan Series on Wednesday, completing a four-game sweep with a 6-2 victory over the Seibu Lions. The Giants won their 20th title, the most in Japan, and their first since 2000. Pinch-hitter Koji Goto had a two-run triple in the sixth inning and Takayuki Saito drove in three runs for the Giants. Left-hander Hisanori Takahashi gave up three hits over eight innings for the win and Junichi Kawahara retired the side in the ninth. Tomohiro Nioka, who hit a grand slam in Game 3 and had nine hits in four games, was the MVP of the series. Tom Evans, formerly of the Texas Rangers, hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to even the score for the Lions. The Lions won the Pacific League with a record of 90-49, the best in Japanese baseball. |
