David Wells, who will start the Yankees' series final against the Orioles on Thursday night, will not be disciplined by the team for his highly publicized incident with a fan.
According to a story Wednesday in Newsday, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman met with Wells on Tuesday to discuss Wells' run-in with a Yonkers, N.Y., man early Saturday morning at a Manhattan diner, during which Wells lost two teeth. "Based on the facts involved, I felt it wasn't warranted to do something," Cashman told Newsday after the Yankees' 5-2 victory over Baltimore in the opener of a doubleheader. Because teams don't have curfews while at home, the fact that Wells was out at 5:50 a.m. ET did not provide grounds for a fine. If the team had fined Wells, they probably would have dealt with an appeal from the Players' Association. Wells said earlier this week he would be ready to make his next start. He was punched in the head, lost two teeth and suffered a scrape over his left eye when he was confronted by Rocco Graziosa in a diner on Manhattan's Upper East side, a couple of blocks from Wells' home. Graziosa, 27, was arrested and charged with assault and menacing. Wells, 39, is 16-7 with a 4.00 ERA this season, pitching a complete game Friday night to beat the Tigers. Hours later, according to police, Wells was at the diner with a friend -- not a teammate -- when Graziosa walked in with some friends and began talking with the star. After the conversation, Graziosa went to his own table and made a remark about Wells' mother, who is deceased. Graziosa then grabbed a butter knife off the table, began waving it and attacked Wells, police Sgt. David Jorin said. |
