Yankees fire Denbo, want Mattingly

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Yankees batting coach Gary Denbo was fired Wednesday, three days after New York finished a seven-game World Series loss in which it scored a total of 14 runs against Arizona.

Denbo's departure had been expected for weeks. Yankees manager Joe Torre thought his players, at Denbo's urging, had become too focused on video this season.

New York hopes to get Don Mattingly to take the job, but the former All-Star has been reluctant to accept a full-time position.

"The Yankee organization appreciates all of Gary's efforts, but we felt a change was necessary as we go forward," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said.

Denbo replaced Chris Chambliss as batting coach on Nov. 10 last year after one season as assistant director of player development. Denbo spent more than a decade with the Yankees' organization as a minor league coach, manager and hitting coordinator.
