PITTSBURGH -- Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin had arthroscopic knee surgery Friday to remove cartilage fragments from his left knee and probably will miss the rest of the season.

The hour-long surgery was performed in Cincinnati. Larkin already was out 10-14 days with a dislocated middle finger on his left hand, so he decided to have the knee surgery now.

If needed, Larkin could return for the final week of the season. But with the Reds fading from the NL Central and wild-card races, they most likely will delay Larkin's return until spring training.

Larkin is batting .313 with 11 home runs and 41 RBI in 102 games. He missed nearly a month earlier in the season for left hand surgery.

Larkin has not played since dislocating the finger Aug. 27. He has also been bothered by a sore knee since Aug. 4, when he sprained a ligament during a hard slide into second base.

Also Friday, Reds catcher Eddie Taubensee had season-ending surgery to repair a ruptured disk in his back. He is expected to be ready for spring training.
