CHICAGO -- Ken Hill's latest stint in the majors lasted less than a week.

The veteran right-hander, slowed by an arthritic elbow the last three seasons, was released by the Chicago White Sox after Tuesday night's game in Oakland.

"If I can't perform and do the things I know I can do, I'm not helping," said Hill, who plans to go home to Texas and forget about baseball for the rest of the year.

"I don't think my arm is out of shape. I just didn't feel the way I can."

Hill, called up on Aug. 24, was 0-1 with a 24.00 ERA and six walks in two appearances for the White Sox. He started one game and pitched out of the bullpen in the other.

In 16 starts for the Anaheim Angels earlier this season, Hill had a 5-7 record and a 6.52 ERA. He was released by the Angels on Aug. 7, and signed a minor league contract with the White Sox on Aug. 18.

Hill has three 16-win seasons in his 13-year career, the last coming in 1996 for the Texas Rangers.
