ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Boston Red Sox have sent struggling knuckleballer Tim Wakefield to the bullpen and replaced him in the rotation with Ramon Martinez.
"I know he's disappointed, but he can help us there," Red Sox manager Jimy Williams said before Monday night's game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Williams said Wakefield could make a couple spot starts down the stretch.
Martinez, on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee contusion, is scheduled to pitch Saturday against Seattle. It will be his first appearance since going on the DL on Aug. 1.
Williams said Martinez, 8-6 with a 6.14 ERA in 21 starts, will throw 45-60 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday.
Wakefield, who is winless in his past eight starts, declined comment. He allowed nine runs -- seven earned -- over five innings in an 11-7 loss Sunday to Kansas City.
Wakefield is 6-9 with a 5.68 ERA in 39 games, including 15 starts. |
