Williams, Durazo also out of lineup

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-hander Todd Stottlemyre on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday after an MRI found tendinitis in his pitching elbow. The banged-up Diamondbacks also didn't have Matt Williams and Erubiel Durazo in the lineup against St. Louis on Tuesday night because of wrist injuries. Arizona recalled right-hander Vicente Padilla from Triple-A Tucson, but Padilla is a reliever, and the absence of Stottlemyre (8-3) leaves a hole in the rotation. "We don't have to make that decision until Friday, so we'll try to do what we can do to win baseball games until then, and then we'll need a starter for Saturday," manager Buck Showalter said.

He said the candidates include right-handers Mike Morgan, a starter most of his career, Padilla or Nelson Figueroa, who is still with Triple-A Tucson. Stottlemyre (8-3), tied for the National League lead in victories, came out of Monday's game against St. Louis in the sixth inning with soreness in his elbow. He was trailing 1-0, and the Cardinals beat the Diamondbacks 3-0. Stottlemyre had an inflamed ulnar nerve in his right arm before the game, and had been pitching through the pain for some time.

Padilla will be making his second stint with the parent club this season. He was 1-0, with a 1.00 ERA in five relief appearances the first time. Williams and Durazo had MRIs earlier Tuesday. Hand specialist Don Sheridan said the MRI was done on Williams because an X-ray taken after he was hit on the left wrist Sunday showed a line along the bone.

"We followed that up with an MRI which showed the the line was not a fracture, but rather a small blood-vessel line," Sheridan said. "He has been cleared to play and is day to day, depending on how his soft-tissue swelling and soreness improves." Durazo, who took the first-base job away from Travis Lee last year, hurt his right wrist in spring training. Sheridan did not immediately have the results from Durazo's MRI. Hanley Frias made his first start of the season at third, and Greg Colbrunn played first.
